Hyaluronan is probably known to most of us with regard to cosmetics. Because many current cosmetics also contain hyaluronan. But what is hyaluronan in the end and which tasks and functions does it fulfil inside our body?
Actually, hyaluronan is—put simply—a very specific chemical construct from different polysaccharides, which are also commonly called “glycosaminoglycans” or “mucopolysaccharides”. It additionally supplies the collagen, which is important for the skin’s elasticity, important nutrients, keeps it moist and elastic.
Hyaluronan is also the main component of our synovial fluid and functions as lubricant for all joint movements.
The hyaluronan in our body therefore has many important tasks in our body. The fascinating thing about hyaluronan is, however, that it can multiply its volume due to its enormous natural storage capacity of moisture like a sponge. In our skin, this effects our skin to be more or less “padded” from the inside. As an illustration: One gram hyaluronan has the exceptional ability to store 6000 times its own weight in water, this equals six liters of fluid! This is one of the reasons why hyaluronan is so attractive for cosmetics and also medicine.
